Major Soil Orders of India (ICAR Classification)

  • • Alluvial Soils (40% of landmass): Deposited by river systems in Indo-Gangetic and Brahmaputra plains and coastal deltas. Divided into Khadar (newer, highly fertile flood-plain alluvium) and Bhangar (older, less fertile upland alluvium containing calcareous nodules called Kankar). Rich in potash and lime; deficient in nitrogen and phosphorus.
  • • Black Soils (Regur / Black Cotton Soil): Formed by weathering of basaltic lava rocks of the Deccan Trap (Maharashtra, Gujarat, MP). Rich in clay, iron, lime, calcium, magnesium; highly argillaceous with high water-retaining capacity; develops deep self-ploughing fissures in dry summers.
  • • Red & Yellow Soils: Formed on crystalline igneous rocks (granite/gneiss) under low rainfall; reddish color due to wide diffusion of ferric iron oxides; acidic, poor in nitrogen and humus.
  • • Laterite Soils: Formed under high temperature and heavy alternating wet-dry seasons in Western Ghats, Meghalaya. Intense leaching (silica leached away, leaving iron and aluminum oxides); acidic, poor in organic matter; ideal for tea, coffee, rubber, and cashew nuts.
  • • Saline / Alkaline Soils (Usar / Reh / Kallar): Contain excess sodium, potassium, and magnesium salts due to poor drainage and intensive canal irrigation in dry areas (Punjab, Haryana).

Natural Vegetation Types & Forest Cover

  • • Tropical Evergreen & Semi-Evergreen: Rainfall >200 cm (Western Ghats, North-East hills, Andaman & Nicobar). Multi-layered canopy, no definite shedding season. Timber: Rosewood, Mahogany, Ebony, Aini, Rubber.
  • • Tropical Deciduous (Monsoon Forests - 65% of India): Divided into Moist Deciduous (100-200 cm rain - Teak, Sal, Shisham, Sandalwood) and Dry Deciduous (70-100 cm rain - Tendu, Palas, Amaltas, Bel). Shed leaves for 6-8 weeks in spring/summer.
  • • Tropical Thorn Forests: Rainfall <50 cm (Rajasthan, Gujarat, SW Punjab). Acacias, Cacti, Babool, Khejri.
  • • Mangrove (Tidal) Forests: Littoral salt-tolerant halophytes growing in muddy intertidal zones. Sundarbans (Sundari tree, Heritiera fomes) - world's largest mangrove forest; feature stilt roots and breathing roots (pneumatophores).

Frequently Asked Questions (Soil Vegetation)

Q: What is the difference between 'Khadar' and 'Bhangar' alluvial soils?

Bhangar is the older alluvium found on higher river terraces beyond normal flood levels; it is clayey, darker, and contains calcareous nodules (Kankar). Khadar is the newer, light-colored fine sandy silt deposited annually along low-lying river floodplains, making it exceptionally fertile without chemical fertilizers.

Q: Why is Black Soil famously termed 'self-ploughing'?

Black soil has a high proportion of expanding clay minerals (montmorillonite). When wet, it swells and becomes intensely sticky; upon drying during summer, it contracts severely, forming deep, wide cracks. Soil particles crumble into these cracks, effectively aerating and naturally turning over the soil, a phenomenon called 'self-ploughing'.

Q: What are 'Pneumatophores' in mangrove vegetation?

Pneumatophores are specialized erect, pencil-like roots that grow vertically upward out of waterlogged, anaerobic saline mud in mangrove forests to take in atmospheric oxygen for the root system.
