Standard Categorical Propositions & Venn Distributions
- • Universal Affirmative (A-type): 'All A are B' (Subject distributed, Predicate undistributed).
- • Universal Negative (E-type): 'No A is B' (Both Subject and Predicate distributed).
- • Particular Affirmative (I-type): 'Some A are B' (Neither Subject nor Predicate distributed).
- • Particular Negative (O-type): 'Some A are not B' (Predicate distributed, Subject undistributed).
Modern Banking Syllabus Rules: 'Only a few' & Possibility Cases
- • 'Only a few A are B' means: (1) Some A are B AND (2) Some A are NOT B. It contains both positive and negative definite relationships simultaneously.
- • 'Only A are B' means: All B are A, and B CANNOT have any overlap with any third entity outside A.
- • Complementary Pairs (Either/Or Condition): Must have (1) Same subject & predicate, (2) Both individual conclusions cannot be deduced definitely, and (3) Form either an A-O, I-O, or I-E pair (Note: A-E is never a complementary pair).
| Premise Combination | Valid Deduction | Notes / Traps |
|---|---|---|
| All A are B + All B are C | All A are C (A+A = A) | Converse: Some C are A |
| All A are B + No B is C | No A is C (A+E = E) | Converse: No C is A |
| Some A are B + All B are C | Some A are C (I+A = I) | Middle term B distributed in 2nd premise |
| Some A are B + Some B are C | No Definite Conclusion (I+I = Null) | Check for Either/Or if options contain complementary pair |
| Only a few A are B | Some A are B & Some A are not B | 'All A being B' is NEVER a possibility |

Frequently Asked Questions (Syllogism)
Q: What is the fastest method to solve syllogisms in competitive exams?
The minimal-overlapping Venn diagram technique combined with the 100-50 tick-cross distribution rule is the fastest and most foolproof method for preliminary exams.
Q: Can a definite conclusion also be treated as a possibility in syllogisms?
No. If a conclusion is definitely true or definitely false, its 'possibility' statement is invalid (e.g., if All A are B is already a proven fact, 'All A being B is a possibility' is strictly False in exam evaluation).
